With a truly impressive interpretation of Giuseppe Verdi’s Requiem Mass, the Sing Along Concert On Tour was closed on Saturday at the Palau de la Música Catalana, the annual choral convention organized by Interkultur, the pioneer organization in the world in the organization of international coral meetings and competitions. Based in Germany, one of its itinerant projects in Barcelona between May 29 and June 1, the occasion when the Verdi- Requiem was attended by 400 volunteer singers. On Saturday, the show was quite an experience: on the stage of the Palau de la Música Catalana, the Orfeó Català shared the leading role with the Rundfunkchor of Berlin and with the OBC, while the platform, the amphitheater and the boxes 1,300 choirs from 29 countries occupy the second floor, some coming from afar, such as the Tasmanian Symphony (Australia).
The soloists recruited adequately fulfilled their parts beginning with the soprano Iwona Sobotka, the mezzo Agnieszka Rehlis with his extensive record, the tenor Laszlo Boldizsar, with a very timbred voice, and the bass Francisco Crespo, who only lacked greater emptiness in bass and extreme treble.
Directing 1,300 singers divided between the stage and the lounge in this limb project is an almost impossible task, but Simon Halsey, head of the Orfeó, was able to control it without major setbacks and with the help of a careful OBC. The audience, almost in shock after such a feat, thanked an evening that will go down in the annals of the modernist auditorium.
